MP4 to WAV

Free MP4 to WAV conversion for editing, podcasts and sampling. Uncompressed 16-bit audio, unlimited files, and your video never leaves your device.

Your file is converted in your browser and never uploaded to our servers.

How to Convert MP4 to WAV

  1. 1

    Add the MP4

Drag the clip onto the box or tap to browse. Camera files, screen recordings, exports from an editor and M4V files are all accepted.

  2. 2

    Keep WAV selected

WAV is already chosen. It has no bitrate menu, because the audio is written uncompressed instead of being encoded again.

  3. 3

    Convert and save the WAV

Your browser fetches the converter on the first run and caches it. The result keeps the clip's name, so C0042.MP4 is saved as C0042.wav.

Why Use This MP4 to WAV Converter

Footage stays on your computer

FFmpeg runs as WebAssembly inside the tab and reads the MP4 from your disk. Unreleased cuts and client material are never uploaded, while many online converters push the whole file to a server first.

No second round of compression

The AAC track is decoded once and stored as plain PCM. Whatever you cut, mix or bounce from it afterwards loses nothing more to encoding. Our test MP4s, H.264 video with AAC sound, all came out as valid 16-bit WAV files.

Sample rate and channels untouched

We don't resample or downmix. A 48 kHz stereo track comes out as 48 kHz stereo, so it drops onto a 48 kHz timeline without conversion.

Free, with no file count

No account, no watermark, no queue and no daily cap. Convert one clip, then the next, as often as the project needs.

Silent clips are flagged

If the MP4 carries no audio stream, the page says "This video has no audio track" rather than handing you an empty WAV.

What People Use MP4 to WAV Conversion For

Audio for a video edit

Pull the location sound from a B-camera clip and lay it under another shot. Or clean it in an audio tool before it goes back on the timeline.

Sampling your own footage

Chop a street-market ambience, a door slam or a laugh from clips you shot and load the WAV straight into a sampler or DAW.

Podcast and interview edits

Recorded the interview on camera? Edit the conversation as WAV, then export the episode once, in whatever format your host wants.

Sound design libraries

Build a folder of effects and room tones from your own MP4s, kept uncompressed so layering and pitch shifts don't stack artifacts.

Transcription and analysis

Some speech-to-text, captioning and audio analysis tools ask for a WAV or PCM file instead of a video. Hand them the audio alone.

Handing audio to a mixer

Send a collaborator just the sound of a locked cut as a WAV rather than a multi-gigabyte video they have to strip themselves.

Is WAV Higher Quality Than MP4?

Not by itself. The sound in a typical MP4 is AAC, a lossy codec, and the detail it dropped at recording time is gone. Converting MP4 to WAV decodes that AAC exactly and stores the result as 16-bit PCM, so the WAV sounds the same as the clip, never better.

What WAV buys you is a stop to further loss. Every time an edited MP3 or AAC file is saved again, the encoder throws a little more away. Work in WAV, then encode once at the end.

16-bit gives roughly 96 dB of dynamic range, more than a phone or camera AAC track carries. Need 24-bit or another sample rate for a session? Convert inside your editor after import.

MP4 to WAV Mistakes in an Editing Workflow

  • Mistake: Converting every clip when your video editor already imports MP4.

Do this instead: Premiere, Resolve and most editors read the audio inside an MP4 directly. Convert when a DAW, sampler or analysis tool needs a standalone WAV.

  • Mistake: Expecting the WAV to fix a muddy or clipped recording.

Do this instead: The WAV holds exactly what the AAC track held. Repair noise and levels in an audio editor; the format change alone won't.

  • Mistake: Emailing an hour of WAV to someone who only needs to listen.

Do this instead: Send a review copy as MP3 or M4A from this same tool, and the WAV only to the person who edits the audio.

  • Mistake: Converting a recording that has separate mic and system tracks.

Do this instead: Only the first audio track is written. Export each track separately from the recorder or editor if you need them all.

  • Mistake: Starting a long 4K recording on a phone.

Do this instead: Very large files can fail on phones with little memory, and an hour of 48 kHz stereo WAV is roughly 690 MB. Use a desktop browser for long takes.

Privacy, Cost and Limits

Converted on your device

Cloudflare hosts this page and jsDelivr delivers the open-source FFmpeg files. Neither receives your MP4; it is read and converted locally.

No charge, no cap

Every conversion is free and there is no limit on how many files you run. No sign-up or premium plan exists.

What it won't do

Output is always 16-bit at the source sample rate, with no rate, bit depth or trim settings. Files go one at a time, and we have not measured a size ceiling.
